Have you ever folded a paper 42 times? How thick would it be? In fact, after 42 folds, the paper is 440,000 kilometres thick. The underestimation of exponential behaviour is a pervasive phenomenon. Evolution trained our minds to think and estimate changes (time, distance, and quantity) linearly and locally. Changes in the digital age, because of the networking effect, happen at an alarming rate for our brains to comprehend. The exponential Behaviour over Time (BOT) graph represents this change more accurately – an expression that is not found often in nature.
John Sterman comments on Linear Growth: “ Linear growth is quite rare. What appears to be linear growth is often actually exponential, but viewed over a time horizon too short to observe the acceleration.”
Mark Bonchek focuses on creating an exponential mindset before creating exponential value in his article “How to Create an Exponential Mindset”.
